Disciplinary powers were conferred on the Council by the Medical and Allied Professions Act CAP 297 of the Laws of Zambia which established the Council and Register. The Act provides that if any registered practitioner:
- Is found by the disciplinary Committee to have been convicted in Zambia or any other country of a criminal offense
- Is found by the disciplinary Committee to have been guilty of infamous conduct in a professional respect,
The committee can impose the following penalties:
- Direct erasure of the name from the register
- Censure him/her
- Caution him/her for a period not exceeding one year any further action against him/her on one or more condition as to his/her conduct during that period
- Order him/her to pay to the Council any costs of and incidental to the proceedings incurred by the Council,
- Impose any of the penalties as the committee thinks fit for the protection of members of the public or in his/her interest.
